Throughout the unnecessary federal debt ceiling crisis, Republican demands have been clear: children and young people should foot the bill. Chuck Fleischmann and his Republican bosses want to cut preschool funding, cut food assistance for mothers and children, cut funding for low-income schools, cut grants for college tuition, cut student loan forgiveness, and cut housing assistance, among many others.
All of this so they can protect the wealthy from paying what they owe while continuing to spend on the military, Medicare, and Social Security. The Republican plan is for an older, richer, whiter generation to get off scot-free while children and young people pay the nation’s debts. Young people need a voice during this assault on their futures.
